Salt House Church

Vision & Values

Our name

Why 'Salt House'?

A Salt House is a place where salt is gathered to be refined and become more 'salty.' When we gather, we seek to become more Christ-like so that when we are scattered, we are better able to bring the essence of God into every corner of our lives - homes, workplaces, and communities - spreading His light and life.

“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavours of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the rubbish.

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand.

“Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand - shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”

Vision

We want to see a light shining in every street in Portishead and beyond, of a household following Jesus and seeking to help others to follow Jesus, providing multiple opportunities for people to discover the life-changing work of Jesus Christ in their own lives.

Values

Four key principles

Our church lives and works around four key principles:

Disciple

We are followers of Jesus in every part of our everyday life, seeking to make more followers of Jesus.

How do we do this?

We seek to foster an environment where whole-life disciple-makers thrive.

Equip

  • Empowered by the Holy Spirit.
  • Enabled to fulfil our God-given potential.

How do we do this?

We seek to be open to all that God would do in our lives, encouraging everyone to develop and use their God-given gifts and abilities and to take their place as ministers of the Gospel in our community.

Connect

  • Connecting with God
  • Connecting with one another
  • Connecting with the wider world and all of creation

How do we do this?

We believe in relationship with God and each other - we are woven together for His mission. We come together not simply for what we can 'get' from church, but for what we can 'bring' to it and how we can be a blessing to both God, to one another and the wider world. We aim to connect and strengthen our community through microchurches and larger shared gatherings offering inspirational, deep teaching and fellowship.

Multiply

  • We have a Kingdom of God focus – the mustard seed which starts small and becomes large
  • We aim to see a light of Christ-followers in every street of our town and beyond

How do we do this?

Our focus is multiplication of Kingdom impact, making a difference wherever God sends us, not just 'bums on seats.' This shapes everything we are and do.

Come and see what this looks like in practice

We meet on Sunday mornings at 10.30 at Roath Road Chapel, and through the week in microchurches across the town.
